THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF GHANA

The democratic dispensation of Ghana as a country is currently a multi-party system. But of late it stands to be questioned whether it is a multi or a two party state. This is as a result of the changes of political parties in the last triple of decades now. Since its been only two political parties which are able to battle their way to the high office of the presidency to form a government. This status quo has been a ritual which seems to beat my understanding as a young man in the country.

Not only has powers been given these political organizations but also one’s willingness to devote his or her entire being to a political party even to death is so appalling. Sometimes I’m tempted to ask if the party is one’s family property willed to them or there’s a blood covenant among party members of these two political parties. Notwithstanding the fact that these two major political parties were established on tribal lines, I believe that’s not the democracy we have chosen to practice.

Nonetheless, prior to the 2016 elections overwhelmingly won by the incumbent President, there was so much expectations by the people. Under Mahama’s administration, there was continuous depreciation of the cedi leading our then aspiring vice president to say that he will arrest the dollar when given the mandate, major power crisis coined in Ghana as “Dumsor”, corruption cases such as the bus branding, SADA and the rest and yet still in crisis.

Under the watch of the Nana Addo-led administration which he promised to create jobs, implement “Free S.H.S”, build factories in every district in Ghana, One Million Dollar per a constituency, restore nurses’ and teachers’ training allowances, reduce corruption and so on, the hardship in the system is unimaginable to the ordinary Ghanaian.

Ghanaians voted massively for Akuffo-Addo because they trusted him to deliver quick, decisive and tangible change due to his promises. Their expectation of the president was extremely high. This level of expectation is perhaps unprecedented in the history of the country. Now two and a quarter year into his administration, the question is still out on whether Akufo-Addo has given a good account of himself as president which even international bodies would seek to find out.

While a number of achievements such as the implementation of “Free SHS” payment of some debts in the health care delivery have been met by the President, many Ghanaians have recently begun to complain of failed promises, job losses, cedi depreciation, transport fare hikes and general economic hardship. These hardships per personal observations is somewhat equivalent to the difficulties of the previous Mahama-led administration.

So now the questions are which party is bringing what to Ghanaians and what really are the general public expecting from these politicians especially the leaders of the two major political parties? First of all, the policies and programs of these aspirants are going to inform the decision of Ghanaians in the 2020 general elections. Secondly, the answer to the expectation of the citizens is just simple. And that is for a conducive environment to do business, reduced taxes on import duties, incorruptible leadership, increased economic growth rate, reduce price on petroleum products, stabilization of the cedi, improved sanitation and security.

Who really is bringing this change to Ghanaians since both political parties are almost the same. But one will say, the Nana Addo led administration came to power in a worse economic state even with the lies of IMF program in place yet has achieved what the previous government could not do with eight years. On the other hand, the economic hardship of the previous government was not as this so which is which? Hence we are all waiting to see who else the Ghanaian is going to cast their vote for in the 2020 elections considering the polices these politicians will put on board.

Finally, I believe the ordinary Ghanaians are moving gradually from partisan politics and rather making insightful decisions during elections hence looking forward to an election which will be won based on the feasibility of campaign promise instead of merely following a political party in order to save ourselves the hardships our Mother Ghana is facing in this recent times.
